Carr’s Ciderhouse
FOUNDED 2011
Committed to Wild-Fermented Cider
Located in Western Massachusetts, Carr’s Ciderhouse is a small orchard-based cidery committed to creating delicious, high quality, small-batch natural style ciders. We are a family-run business and we take the time required to create exceptional wild-fermented fine ciders, using long-standing, traditional methods.
VISIT CIDERY WEBSITEEmbracing Nature in Our Cider Making
Our cider making has evolved over the years, from a more “proper” winemaking style to one that is more natural. When we ferment our ciders, we let the natural yeasts speak for themselves. In our orchards, we don’t spray any chemicals or use fertilizers, which allows the wild yeasts flourish and encourages long, slow fermentations. We are absolute non-interventionists in the cider making process. The results are natural style and mostly dry ciders (with the occasional fermentation that grudgingly leaves some residual sugars!). Our ciders are not fined or filtered, and are made from one ingredient – fresh pressed cider!
Cider Orchard with A View
Our no-spray orchard is located on the northwest slope of Mount Warner, overlooking the Connecticut River and the breathtakingly beautiful valley it runs through. The shallow sandy-loam soil of this hillside, underlain with quartzite and feldspar bedrock, enables us to grow intensely-flavored apples of high sugar content. Our young orchard of 2500 apple trees was planted between 2007 and 2012, with more planting ongoing. The trees are producing an interesting selection of apples such as Yarlington Mill, Golden Russet, Kingston Black, Goldrush, and Dabinett – apples we know add a tremendous amount of complexity and richness to our ciders.
The Makers
Jonathan Carr and Nicole Blum
We are a husband and wife team – Jonathan Carr and Nicole Blum. We officially launched our operation in 2012 after six years of tending our baby apple trees (they take a long time to mature!). Formerly organic market gardeners at the turn of the century, we find it exciting to run a business based on products we have shepherded from planting the saplings to corking the bottles!
